Statement on Violence Against People Seeking Asylum

We’re horrified by the recent violence and misinformation targeting people seeking asylum, refugees, and immigrants across England and Northern Ireland after the tragic stabbing in Southport on 29 July 2024. Our hearts go out to all those affected by these senseless acts of violence.

The spread of harmful misinformation and the resulting riots highlight the dangers of xenophobia, Islamophobia, and anti-immigrant sentiment. Words matter, and we are seeing the effects of divisive language. These violent actions haven't emerged from a vacuum—they've been fueled by hostile asylum policies and stoked by political rhetoric and the media. This not only threatens public safety but also deepens divisions in our communities.

People seeking asylum came to the UK seeking safety, only to be facing rising violence and hate here. These individuals are already more likely to face menstrual inequity and now, the threat of far-right attacks means they can't even leave their hotels safely, let alone to get basic necessities. It’s a terrifying reality that strips them of their autonomy and agency.

The UK has a legal and moral obligation to provide a safe, welcoming, and humane asylum to those fleeing violence and persecution. The current climate of hostility and violence is a disgrace, scapegoating immigrants and standing in stark contrast to these obligations. Targeting immigrants and asylum seekers with hatred and violence is utterly unacceptable and must be fully condemned.

The government needs to step up and take immediate action to protect people seeking asylum. This isn’t just about period products; it’s about basic human rights. Every person deserves autonomy, agency, and a safe place to live and menstruate.
